FIFA World Cup 2026: The Role of VAR and Technology in Match Officiating

The 2026 World Cup uses the most advanced officiating technology in FIFA World Cup 2026 VAR Technology history. Video Assistant Referee (VAR), semi-automated offside and goal-line technology all play a role. Here is a complete guide to how match officiating works in 2026.

VIDEO ASSISTANT REFEREE (VAR)

VAR was introduced to the World Cup at the 2018 edition in Russia. It uses multiple camera angles and a dedicated video review team to check four specific types of match-changing incidents.

The four VAR review areas are:
Goals: Was there an offense in the buildup to a goal?
Penalty decisions: Should a penalty have been awarded or not awarded?
Direct red card incidents: Did a player commit a red-card-worthy offense?
Mistaken identity: Did the referee book the wrong player?

VAR does not review yellow cards for simulation. It does not correct every mistake. It only corrects clear and obvious errors.

HOW VAR WORKS IN PRACTICE

When a potential VAR incident occurs, the on-field referee receives a message in their earpiece from the VAR team watching the replay footage. The referee can either accept the VAR suggestion and make the correction without reviewing the footage themselves, or they can go to the on-field review screen (marked with a rectangle icon) to watch the replays directly.

On average, VAR reviews take between 60 and 120 seconds. Complex incidents involving multiple angles can take up to three minutes.

SEMI-AUTOMATED OFFSIDE TECHNOLOGY

Semi-automated offside was introduced at the 2022 World Cup and returns in 2026 with refinements. The system uses 12 dedicated cameras installed in each stadium to track player body positions at 50 frames per second. AI software draws precise position lines to determine offside rulings within seconds.

This technology has dramatically reduced the time needed for offside VAR reviews. In Qatar 2022, some offside decisions that previously took three to four minutes with manual checking were confirmed in under 30 seconds.

For 2026, FIFA says the system has further improved accuracy in identifying the specific body part used for offside comparisons, including shoulder and arm position that previously created judgment calls.

GOAL-LINE TECHNOLOGY

Goal-line technology uses high-speed cameras to determine instantly whether the ball has fully crossed the goal line. The system sends a signal to the referee's watch within one second of any goal-line incident. This eliminates any doubt about whether a ball was in or out.

The technology was first used at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. It has eliminated the controversial "ghost goal" scenarios that previously occurred when balls crossed the line but referees did not award the goal.

PLAYER TRACKING DATA

FIFA uses player tracking technology at the 2026 World Cup to collect real-time performance data including speed, distance covered, sprints and heart rate. This data is shared with teams and used in the official match statistics.

Players are tracked through sensors in the match ball and through the stadium camera systems. The data does not influence officiating decisions but provides fans and analysts with detailed performance metrics after each match.

WHAT CRITICS SAY

Not everyone is happy with VAR. Critics argue it slows the game, creates confusion and sometimes introduces more controversy than it removes. The offside technology has drawn particular criticism because millimeter-level decisions (sometimes fractions of a centimeter) can disallow goals in ways that feel contrary to the spirit of the game.

FIFA has maintained its commitment to the technology despite criticism, arguing that correct decisions are ultimately more important than fast decisions.
